Satisfying DEA Standards for Controlled Substances [2025 Update - CE Available]

This product contains all the ACPE requirements for CE credit: “Satisfying DEA Standards for Controlled Substances” course as well as its CE Mastery Exam and Evaluation. To receive educational credit, you must pass the CE Mastery Exam and complete the Evaluation.

This program provides pharmacy technicians with essential knowledge they need to understand and follow procedures that ensure compliance with controlled substances laws enforced by the DEA. Pharmacy technicians learn to identify the “red flags,” such as a lack of a valid doctor-patient relationship, or customers who exhibit “drugged” behavior. The course also instructs pharmacy technicians on what steps to take should they discover a questionable prescription, such as alerting the pharmacist, and how to communicate appropriately with a patient. Finally, various strategies for keeping controlled substances secure and safe are reviewed. Pharmacy technicians end the course by learning what to do in the case of a robbery or burglary.

Pharmacy technicians who complete the program will be able to:

  • Describe your obligations as a pharmacy technician regarding the dispensing of controlled substances
  • Identify typical “red flags” that may indicate a prescription for controlled substances was not issued for a legitimate medical purpose
  • Describe ways to keep controlled substances secure
  • Identify recommendations on how to respond to robberies if they occur
