Patient Engagement Skills for Pharmacy Staff (CE Option)

Patient Engagement Skills for Pharmacy Staff is part of the Prepare to Serve suite for retail employees. This course gives Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians an important communications skills tool – the patient engagement model – for improving knowledge sharing with patients so they can better manage their own wellness. Pharmacy staff discover the benefits gained by both patients and pharmacies when the engagement model is used. Communicating effectively with patients is emphasized, with specific ways to establish a personal connection, discover needs, and find solutions. Lessons in the course cover the four steps of the patient engagement model:

  1. CONNECT with patients using a personal greeting.
  2. DISCOVER their needs by asking the right questions.
  3. MATCH solutions to their needs based on knowledge and experience.
  4. COMPLETE the interaction in a way that lets patients feel valued.

Special care is taken to explain how pharmacy staff can share their knowledge and experience with customers, establishing trust and encouraging return visits. Learners discover how applying this model to engage and educate patients promotes the pharmacy’s commitment to health and wellness goals. It also provides solutions the patient may not have known they needed, such as a medication review, and encourages loyalty to the store, the pharmacy, and its staff.

This course offers short knowledge check activities along the way with case study examples. Learners take a final assessment to demonstrate their mastery of course content.

To receive 1.0 contact hours (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education in all states that recognize the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as an approved provider, you must obtain a score of at least 80% on this assessment. After passing the assessment you can view and print your statement of credit online.
